Port-la-Nouvelle (Aude)

port la nouvelle : L'Ile Sainte-Lucie Port-la-Nouvelle

Between the sea and the canals, in the Regional Natural Park of Narbonne, this walk begins in the midst of protected Mediterranean vegetation, bursting with rare flora.

At the station join the path of the Canal de la Robine as far as the lock, then cross the bridge: the route starts. Once a thriving port, the island of Sainte-Lucie has been inhabited since ancient times.

From the headland, you can enjoy jaw-dropping 360 degree views over the Canal de la Robine, where you’ll find many rare species of wild birds. The Canal del la Robine flows in the old bed of the river Aude, whose course was realigned in the Middle Ages.

Wine tankers once used this canal, now classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, to reach the Canal du Midi.

 See on the way:

  • The Canal de la Robine
  • The view over the over the lagoons and the sea
  • The beaches and the town of Port la Nouvelle.
