The Maillol museum in Banyuls sur Mer is located in the artist's isolated farmhouse in the Roume valley, a part of the municipal area of Banyuls sur mer. Aristide Maillol is famous in particular for his sculptures of women with rounded figures. Many of his works are shown in Céret, in Banyuls sur mer, and in Perpignan where an avenue has been named after him.
It presents large permanent collections that belonged to Dina Vierny, the famous sculptor's model. Works ranging from the era of Maillol to Kandinsky are shown (works by Douanier Rousseau, Bombois, Séraphine, Peyronnet and Desnos), drawings, "modern primitive" artists such as Picasso and Braque and contemporary works of art. Themes are revealed which give an understanding of the artist's development and how he influenced his contemporaries.
His grave, of which the funeral monument is his work "La Méditerranée", is in the garden of the Maillol Museum - a peaceful workshop conducive to meditation.
Around 40 statues in bronze and terra cotta are on show, as well as drawings and paintings.
