Pres Bas Roman Villa at Loupian

The Romans had a profound influence on French culture. They laid out vast agricultural areas and built villas, some of them huge, opulent and richly decorated with mosaics and murals.

Around the 1st century BC, a small farm was established on the slopes of a vale above the Thau basin.

In the 1st and 2nd centuries AD, the Pres Bas Roman Villa was transformed into a grand patrician house, complete with thermal baths. The production of wine on the estate required the building of a small port, as well as pottery workshops to produce the jars (amphorae) used for transporting the wine.

At the end of the period of Antiquity (4th - 5th centuries), the roman villa was completely rebuilt, and the house became a small palace, its floor covered with richly coloured mosaics. A museum building now protects the site and displays the mosaics, which cover an area of 1000 square metres.
