Le Pont du Gard The Pont du Gard - French monuments

The scale of the Pont du Gard, part of a Roman aqueduct that once carried drinking water to Nîmes 50 kilometres away, leaves you breathless: at 275 metres long and 48 metres high, it has no equal.

This impressive, majestic work of civil engineering powerfully illustrates Rome’s domination over the Mediterranean. Once, the Pont du Gard aqueduct was simply for contemplating.

Today, a museum, temporary and permanent exhibitions and a botanical garden in an exceptional natural environment invite travellers to linger. On the recently restored site by the River Gardon, there are guided tours of the bridge, the remains of the aqueduct and the Roman quarry.

Also on site are refreshments and shops; a large exhibition about the building of the bridge and aqueduct and about Roman civilization, and a discovery complex for young people with films and videos. The beautifully preserved bridge and the modern discovery centre make this one of the most fascinating tourist attractions in France.
