Aigues-Mortes

The fortified town of Aigues-Mortes, a medieval citadel in the heart of the Camargue, was founded by Saint Louis in the 13th century because he wanted to ensure that the kingdom of France would have a port on the Mediterranean.

Aigues Mortes is located 5 kilometres from the sea, and has retained its magnificent ramparts, which are a masterpiece of the medieval art of warfare.

You can visit the 17th-century Chapel of the Grey Penitents, which houses a stucco altar-piece by Sabatier. Also see the 17th-century Chapel of the White Penitents with a fresco by Xavier Sigalon, works by Auguste Glaize, the Place Saint Louis and the church of Notre Dame des Sablons (13th century).

Below the ramparts of Aigues-Mortes, mountains of salt (called "camelles") bear witness to a farming activity that respects the environment and the flora and fauna of the Mediterranean.

Come and discover something unique in all of Europe, between Salt and Sea, in wild and carefully preserved natural surroundings, the oldest salt pan on the Mediterranean, with its outstanding range of flora and fauna.
