Villeneuve les Avignon contains some of the finest examples of lay and sacred architecture in Languedoc-Roussillon. The town stands on the banks of the Rhône and faces the Papal Town and its famous bridge.

Villeneuve les Avignon, charming medieval town, residence of Cardinals in the 15th century, has a rich architectural heritage. As well as the Carthusian monastery of the Val de Bénédiction, it is home to Saint André Fort, the Collegiate Church of Notre Dame, the Philippe Le Bel Tower and Saint André abbey and its gardens.

Set at the crossroads of Provence, Languedoc and the Camargue, the town makes a great base for exploring the region and its sights, including the Pont du Gard and Nîmes amphitheatre. Markets, shows and festivals liven up the city throughout the year and there are many hiking, cycling and riding routes in the surrounding countryside.

Carthusian monastery of the Val de Bénédiction

After his election in 1352, Pope Innocent VI gave the Carthusian Order a mansion and land he owned in Villeneuve les Avignon. The monastery consists of a church and three cloisters surrounded by a large number of cells. This was the largest Carthusian monastery in France. The monastery suffered serious damage during the French Revolution. It has been restored and is now a cultural centre.
