Castelnou - villages south France
Its fortified walls and its streets filled with peasant houses in Catalan style make this fortified village a place not to be missed when touring the Aspres valley.
About twenty kilometres south-west of Perpignan, Castelnou stands at the foot of the Aspres hills with, as a background, the Canigou, the Catalans’ mountain of myth and legend. The Viscount’s castle, which dominates the village, must have fitted its pentagonal shape to the steep and irregular ridges of the rock on which its stands.
The remains of its 13th-century ramparts surround cobbled, narrow streets, bordered by houses in ochre tints, outlined in ivy and oleander. A number of artists and craftsmen have found Castelnou an ideal place for their activities and they take part in the events of this wine-growing community where you can taste excellent red wines produced in the region.
