Eus

Eus is an ancient defensive site. Built on terraces in the garrigue between the Conflent valley and Mount Canigou, it was called on to force back the French in the 16th century and the Spanish army in the 18th.

Today, where formerly there stood the old citadel, we find the imposing 18th-century church of Saint Vincent. From around the church the steeply sloping, narrow streets extend, with their pebbled paving. The church stands on the site of the Roman camp that guarded the road from Terrenera to the Cerdagne, and also of Notre Dame de la Volta, a 13th-century chapel of the château.

At the entrance to Eus, the Romanesque chapel is dedicated to the patron of wine-growers and to St Gaudérique. Its entrance has a 13th-century porch in pink marble from Villefranche de Conflent.
