Aubrac - Natural France
Aubrac and Margeride reveal a diverse landscape: the great natural areas and pasturelands of Aubrac, the hills clothed in close-cropped heather, the moors and woodlands of Margeride. Nature reveals all her splendour here. The flora is surprising: Alpine fennel, mountain arnica and even purple foxgloves. In this land of springs, water is always present, from the fast-flowing streams that course down the hillsides to the placid lakes of Aubrac, the most famous of which is Saint-Andéol.
This is the land of the ‘Beast of Gévaudan’ - a mysterious wild animal, thought to be a wolf, which devoured pilgrims on their way through the region in the 18th century. Today, you can visit an animal park to view the local wildlife in safety: wolves at Sainte-Lucie, and European bison at Sainte-Eulalie.
If you follow the pilgrim's way - the Route to Santiago de Compostela - you’ll cross through some of the area’s loveliest landscape, through fir forests and birch woodlands, and valleys clothed with broom and heather.
Wild trout are not the only good catches to be had along the 2700 kilometres of torrents and top quality rivers to be found in Lozère. From rushing waters to the banks of tranquil lakes, Lozère remains a paradise for fishermen.
