Mèze
Mèze, a delightful port of call, on the northern side of the Thau Lagoon, is also known as ‘Ecocité’. Its sailing port, in the heart of the town, has space for 125 moorings for pleasure craft and 47 for fishing boats. The village is the oldest settlement in the Thau basin, and is a shellfish breeding centre. The pretty Thau lagoon - 10 miles long and 3 miles wide - is an inland sea at the foot of Mont Saint Clair.
Things to see & do in Mèze : - The Lagoon Centre - an eco-centre with aquarium and aquatic farm - the ‘Mourre Blanc’, an old oyster farming village with period cabins on the lagoon shore - the Gothic 13th. century church of Saint Hilaire - 12th. century chapel of the Pénitents - the ‘Plain of Dinosaurs’, where you can see fossilized dinosaur eggs and bones - The Port. - The Penitents’ Chapel (12th century). - The ruins of the ramparts. - The Château de Girard (17th century).
