Port Barcarès France - Mediterranean sea France
This seaside resort of Barcarès is set on a ‘grau’ - a channel of water linking the Mediterranean sea with a lagoon. The picturesque old steamer, ‘Lydia’, is anchored on the beach and at night becomes a floating nightclub and casino. Other attractions include a seawater health spa, horseriding centre, Aqualand water leisure park, and sailing school.
The unusual feature of Port Barcarès is that it is divided between a marine lagoon, an exceptional area of 7,000 hectares where Nature reigns supreme, and the Mediterranean. Port Barcarès has found a way to bring together all the fun and activities of a seaside resort with the cultural and historical heritage of the hinterland. And we mustn’t forget its gastronomic traditions, based on age-old recipes: sardines grilled over vine stems, cargolade (a Catalan mixed grill including snails) not to mention boulinada (eel-stew).
