Villeneuve-lès-Maguelone

On the shores of the Mediterranean, Villeneuve-lès-Maguelone will seduce you with its myriad bounties.

Far from the hustle of nearby seaside resorts, this small town in the Languedoc has lost none of its calm, tranquillity and authenticity. Its proximity to Montpellier, Sète and Palavas-les-Flots make this an ideal holiday destination.

Approaching the coastline, along the Arnel and Vic lakes, the skies and land abound in fauna and flora. Of the 250 species of birds observed, flamingos, terns and other herons offer a fascinating and constantly changing spectacle. Along the Canal du Rhône à Sète, salt marshes and "capetchades", traditional heart-shaped fishing nets, testify to the prosperous fishing days of yore. This is also a wine-growing region with bullfighting traditions.

Crossing the timeless landscape, you reach one of the coastline’s most beautiful beaches, 9 km long and unspoilt by any building, it is bathed by waters of excellent quality and has been awarded a Blue Flag.
Facing the sea against a green backdrop, the imposing cathedral of Maguelone is a highpoint of Languedoc history. It rises out of the heart of an island of trees and vines set among a series of lakes. Built eight centuries ago as a fortress, the cathedral housed the former diocese of Montpellier. Its walls are over two meters thick, while its towers are stately with narrow openings. This masterpiece of architecture is a perfect example of Romanesque art. The seventeen stained-glass windows of the Cathedral, designed in 2002 by the American Robert Morris, recall the invention of the Antiform concept of the 60’s and 70’s.
