Haut Languedoc

The high mountains between Hérault and Aude is a country of wild natural beauty.

Haut Languedoc Haut Languedoc

Limestone plateaux, covered in scrub, are sliced through by deep canyons, splashed with red ochre on lake shores, pitted with caves and natural craters, and strewn with historic sites - from industrial relics to religious monuments and ancient citadels.

There’s some great hiking country in this high region, which is part of the regional natural park of Haut-Languedoc. Check out the Héric gorge, and the mountains of Caroux and Espinouse for walking, horse riding, mountain biking and rock-climbing. It’s also a haven for wildlife. You may see a flock of long horn sheep. This breed was introduced here in 1930 and now more than a thousand roam the hills. If you want a slice of the quiet life, head to the tranquil waters of La Raviège lake, near Salvetat-sur-Agout, where you can sail, try watersports, or just relax. On the banks of the Agout river, you can battle with wild trout, or fish for roach, carp, perch and tench.
