The art of the ‘Boutis’, which grew from the Royal cloth manufacturing activities, has become a folk-art in the nimble hands of Mediterranean women. In Calvisson, the "Maison du Boutis", or the ’Boutis House’ is a place where you can discover and see the splendour of this 3-dimensional embroidery technique where two superimposed fabrics are hand-stitched to bring out the contours of the insignia required.

The museum houses and gathers together a unique collection of ancient boutis work from the 18th and 19th centuries. The quality and the richness of the insignia, together with the precision and the deftness of the embroidery, make these true works of art. With the idea of perpetuating this know-how, and to show it off at its true value, the Maison du Boutis organises courses and runs a shop ….

The "Maison du Boutis" proposes a range of courses to show you how you can master this craft. The embroidery is all executed by hand, and no use of the sewing-machine is ever made. From six years old upwards, you too can make your own masterpiece.
