A village of bookshops
The village of Montolieu, north west of Carcassonne, is Europe’s fourth most important village for bookshops and the history of book related crafts. The village, which has 800 inhabitants, shares its passion for books with visitors, who can browse happily in shops selling everything from old books to illustrations, comics and encyclopaedias. There’s also a museum of book crafts and graphic arts, set up in 1992, which houses linotype, presses and binding machines, moulds, pictures and layouts, illustrating the history of the written word from the Palaeolithic era to the present day.
