Alphonse Daudet
Without doubt one of the best-known writers of his time, he was said by Frédéric Mistral « to be the first to use Provençal to write in French ». Many of his literary works, such as Lettres de mon Moulin ou Tartarin de Tarascon, are universally recognised.
Insights into Alphonse Daudet’s life can be found in the Museum of Old Nîmes where the lizard door-knocker that decorated the front door of his birth-place is exhibited, and then by following the Rue Crémieu, to Alphonse Daudet’s uncle’s pharmacy, and the Square Antonin where Daudet’s statue is sited on what was his way to school.
The writer was also once the prestigious guest of the thermal spa of Lamalou les Bains from 1885 à 1893, where, during his stay, he wrote La Doulou, the sad account of a man faced with an implacable illness.
The home of Alphonse Daudet , 20 boulevard Gambetta in Nîmes, is located in Sabrant Hotel.
