Born in 1879 at La Franqui between Leucate and Port La Nouvelle, Henry de Monfreid would relate in many of his writings the exotic and picturesque events of his explorer’s life.

It was Joseph Kessel who advised him to write books about his adventures, and these were immediately a great success.

Author of the Croisière du haschisch, and more than 70 other novels, Henry de Monfreid, having spent all his childhood at La Franqui, later had a villa built there facing the sea, on the beach at Coussoules, where he would return between adventures.
