Molière in Pézenas

For a period of 10 years , from 1647 to 1657, Molière and his friends chose the Pezenas region as their favourite haunt.

Molière à Pézénas Molière - Famous People France

From Toulouse to Nîmes, and passing by Albi, Carcassonne, Béziers, Pézenas and Montpellier, they put on plays in theatres and in the open air, under the protection of the different States and of Armand de Bourbon, Prince of Conti.

In Pézenas, the places with memories attached to Molière are legion : the Hôtel d’Alphonse, where Molière et his troup produced «le Médecin Volant» in front of those same State representatives, and the Jeu de Paume where they played it for the inhabitants of the town, and above all the famous Gely barber’s shop and its relic of a barber’s chair.
