Feu de la Saint-Jean St John’s Day bonfires

Every year on the Sunday before the Feast of St John, people gather on top of the Canigou mountain, overlooking French Catalonia, to keep this tradition alive.

Each village in the region contributes a bundle of firewood, collected locally and marked with its name. All the wood is brought together on the summit and set alight. This serves as a signal for the lighting of all the other St John’s Day bonfires.
