The Sardana

Imported from Spain by Republican refugees in 1936, the dance called the Sardana is Catalonia's most picturesque tradition.

La Sardane - Danse traditionnelle Sardane

The dancers move to the music of the 'cobla’, an 11-piece orchestra that squeezes passion and feeling out of every note.

The dance subtly alternates eight short steps with 16 long ones.

At festivals or competitions, the dancers' raised arms look like a garland. In the finale, the dancers form concentric circles to dance a 'Sardana of fraternity'.
