The Tambourine Ball-Game

The Tambourine Ball-game is descended from a Roman game called "sféristérium" that was also the ancestor of tennis and Basque pelota.

Jeu de balle au tambourin The Tambourine Ball-Game

It is played in the centre of villages in the Herault region, around Pézenas and Gignac, and also in Germany and Italy.

The game involves two teams of five players, who send a ball backwards and forwards using a wooden circle covered in skin: the tambourine.

Agility and flexibility are needed to keep up with the very fast exchange of balls. The game is played in the open air in summer, with a mixture of passion and good humour.
