The Transhumance

In spring and autumn the mountain folk of Lozère and the Pyrénées-Orientales move their herds from one grazing-ground to another.

In spring, the cattle are moved from the plains to pastures high in the mountains, and in October they return to the lowlands. The movement to mountain pastures is especially important as it marks the arrival of spring. The people celebrate this with a mass migration or ‘transhumance’ of several herds, accompanied by folk dancing and the sampling of home-grown produce.
