The cooperative wine cellars

A little-known piece of heritage in Languedoc-Roussillon

[Cave coopérative de Castries. Façade principale], par Paul Brès, n.d. [1941](A.D. 34 : 128 J 33, fonds Brès, Bédarieux, Etudes prémiminaires). Cooperative Cellars in Castries. Paul Brès

Studies by researchers from the General Heritage Inventory suggest that with 582 winemaking cooperatives in Languedoc-Roussillon and 109 distilleries in the Hérault, the region is becoming the symbol of the French cooperative winemaking movement.

Built mostly between 1905 – (Mudaison and Maraussan, visited by Jean Jaurès, are the oldest in France) – and 1965, the cooperatives feature a wide variety of architectural styles alive with Southern character.

Despite the recent series of winemaking crises, globalisation and increasing urbanisation, over 300 cooperatives still operate today.

The Cooperatives wine cellars in Languedoc-Roussillon site, posted by the Languedoc-Roussillon Region, invites you to discover this fragile and little-known industrial heritage.
